About the Authors

ROD PAIGE was U.S. Secretary of Education from 2001 through 2005 under President George W. Bush. During his tenure, he was a fierce and innovative champion of education reform who led the way in setting new standards of achievement for all students in our education system. He spearheaded the implementation of the historic No Child Left Behind Act, with its goal of reinvigorating America’s
education system. Dr. Paige served as Superintendent of Houston Schools for eight years and was Dean of the College of Education at Texas
Southern University for 10 years. He has been honored as an outstanding educator by the Council of the Great City Schools and the National Association of Black Educators. In 2001 the American Association of School Administrators named him the National Superintendent of the Year. He is also a member of numerous boards for corporations, educational organizations and foundations, including the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation and The Broad Foundation. He lives in Houston, Texas.

ELAINE WITTY, Ed.D, served 18 years as Dean of Education at Norfolk State University and is a noted educator. Prior to working in higher education, she taught in elementary, middle, and high schools. Dr. Witty frequently contributes articles and chapters to educational publications, including The Future of Assessment, Leading a Profession, AACTA Agenda, and Patterns of Excellence. She is also active in volunteer work with faith-based projects and community development including as campaign manager for Senator Yvonne B. Miller, first Africian American woman elected to the General Assembly in the Commonwealth of Virginia. She lives in Columbia, South Carolina
